Mumbai Metro History

Mumbai Metro is a multi-operator network — different lines are run by Mumbai Metro One Pvt. Ltd (Line 1), the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), and Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC). The first line (Versova–Andheri–Ghatkopar) opened in 2014, and the network has grown steadily since as additional lines have come online across the city.

Facts at a Glance
  • Run by multiple operators across different lines, unlike most single-operator Indian metro networks
  • Line 3 (Aqua Line) is a largely underground corridor connecting Colaba to Bandra-Kurla Complex and beyond
  • Designed to relieve pressure on Mumbai's famously crowded suburban rail network
Expansion Plan

Mumbai's metro network has been expanding line-by-line for several years, with more corridors under construction. Check MMRDA and MMRC's official channels for the latest line openings and construction updates.
