Delhi Metro History
Delhi Metro is operated by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Delhi. Construction began in 1998 and the first section — between Shahdara and Tis Hazari on the Red Line — opened in December 2002, making it one of the first modern metro networks in India.
Since then, the network has expanded in phases across four corridors, eventually growing into one of the largest metro networks in the world by route length, extending into the neighbouring cities of Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad and Ghaziabad as part of the wider Delhi-NCR region.
- Operated by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), a Government of India / Government of Delhi joint venture
- One of the largest metro networks in India by route length and station count
- Includes the Airport Express Line connecting New Delhi to Indira Gandhi International Airport
- Extends beyond Delhi into Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad and Ghaziabad
DMRC has continued to extend existing corridors and add new lines in phases since the network first opened. Check the official DMRC website for current construction status and planned extensions.
